Material Handling Questions
How can I tell how much a forklift can lift?
On all brands of forklifts, information is located on a capacity plate, showing load center and capacity ratings. The plate is installed from the factory, and as attachments are added or removed in the field, new factory plates can be ordered and placed in the forklift.
What information do I need to have ready when I call for parts pricing?
Equipment make, model number and serial number are needed to provide a parts quote.
Does ACT work on brands that ACT doesn't sell?
Yes, ACT works on all brands of material handling equipment, as well as compact and heavy construction equipment, even if we aren't a dealer for the brand. Please contact us for any specific service need.
Why not wait until my equipment breaks before getting a PM?
The PM can prolong the time between repairs, keep the equipment operating longer, and reduce overall expenses. ACT technicians can help you avoid downtime by pinpointing potential problems before breakdowns occur.
How do I know when its time to get new tires on my forklift?
There are many reasons to replace tires. Chunking and cracking of the tire tread is one reason. Normal wear is expected with regular use, so check the tread. There could be a safety line on the tire to indicate replacement wear. Some tires have no wear line, and in these cases, use the top of the tire size or tire brand name on the side of the tire as the wear line. If your equipment has pneumatic (air filled) tires, a flat tire causes most repairs due to puncture. Sometimes we can patch, but the patch repair possibility depends on the puncture size and location.
How do I know when its time for new forks on my forklift?
Once wear reaches 10% on the heel of the forks, the forks must be replaced. Ten percent wear results in a 20% reduction in rated fork capacity and represents a significant exposure for accidents.
Are forklifts required to have a backup alarm?
OSHA says: No, but if the operator's view to the rear is obstructed, it should. For example, a forklift with an enclosed cab should have a back-up alarm because the cab itself is an obstruction to vision. In addition, if the alarm is supplied by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), you are not allowed to alter or remove it.
Does a forklift need to have a seat belt?
OSHA says: Yes. This has been an ANSI standard since 1993, although most of the major manufacturers have been outfitting their forklifts with seat belts well before that date. OSHA enforces the seat belt rule under general duty.
Do older forklifts need to be retrofitted with a seatbelt if they don't come with one?
OSHA says: Yes. But if for some reason it is not possible, you must be able to show that you made every effort to comply with OSHA requirement to retrofit.
Does ACT service and sell parts for material handling equipment other than Toyota?
Yes, we sell and service parts for all makes and models forklifts.
How long does it take to get a forklift technician to come out to my location?
ACT will respond in four hours or less.
How can I tell how high the mast will go on a forklift?
The mast height is located on a factory installed plate with the maximum fork height.
Is an operator license required to operate a rental forklift?
Anyone that operates a forklift has to be safety certified. We offer forklift operator safety training for customers in several ways. Check out our "Safety Training" page on this website for more details.
Why should I perform a PM on my electric pallet jack?
Just like the larger forklifts, pallet jacks have a manufacturers list of scheduled maintenance that need to be done according to the manual.
Do my operators need to be trained to use an electric pallet jack?
Yes, your operators must be trained to operate electric pallet jacks and we offer training on this equipment.
Can you work on Hyster, Yale, Komatsu, Cat, etc. forklifts?
Yes we can. Our technicians can work on all types of material handling equipment.
What is your response time for a technician to arrive at the location once I call your dispatch for a breakdown?
We have a 2 hour response time on all breakdown calls.
Which forklift type is the most cost effective, electric or propane?
Overall, electric forklifts will have the lowest cost of ownership. They have fewer moving parts and therefore have lower maintenance requirements. They require no oil changes, tune ups, etc. The cost of charging forklift batteries is also less than fueling a gas or diesel powered forklift. However, electric forklifts have a higher investment up front because of the price of the industrial battery and charger.
Do you offer 24 hour service?
Yes, and 365 days a year.
Can you certify my scissor lifts?
Yes
What kind of equipment do you rent?
We rent all types of material handling and construction equipment for daily, weekly, monthly, and even longer terms.
Does your company certify fire doors?
Yes
Construction Equipment Questions
Is construction equipment rental a better option than purchasing equipment?

Specific details such as how, when, where and for how long will the construction equipment be needed should be considered in this choice. For a large number of businesses, construction equipment rental can be a money-saving option if the project is a short-term one.
